Biography
French artist born in Brest. Matthieu Dorval works with the immediacy of gesture and the vivacity of color. The artist's work draws on the meticulous observation of the landscape as well as scientific literature and great authors: Victor Hugo, Xavier Grall, Victor Segalen… The harmony of his compositions expresses the poetic force of the elements. The artist likes to explore the tumult of storms, rocky cliffs and the effect of light on the landscape. More than painting a landscape, the artist deciphers it and penetrates its framework and its substance.
In 2016, Matthieu Dorval discovered China during a residency at the Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing and participated in the international project “Elsewhere is Here". In 2018, he was invited to the Shangyu Ceramic Art Center and began a series of ceramics, Les Officiers célestes, which entered the museum's collections.
These are fragments of an imaginary and dreamlike archaeology, that of ancient remains, vanished landscapes, and buried cities. These fragments of fire and earth question our memory, our history, what persists and what disappears.
