Jean Guy Morin

Artist Statement:

My name is Jean Guy Morin. I am a painter although I have worked and sold in other mediums. My first work was to carve tiki gods from scrap pine for necklaces and bracelets back in high school.

I am a reader, a musician and an observer of life. In addition to Psychology and Art History I have studied art with David Marshall (B.C.), Madeline Wiener (Colorado), Guy Pierre (Quebec) mentored with Bernard Poulin for portraiture (Ont.), studied sculpture at U of O, Capilano College and have taken a multitude of workshops.

I produce on average 30/45 works per year, in oil on wood panel. Currently I have begun exploring a new (for me) format for painting. A third form of abstraction that permits the audience to connect with the work from a distance but it dissipates into abstraction as they approach.

My choice of composition varies in scale and subject dependent on the circumstances in my life. I am sympathetic of socials struggles and our plight on this planet and will frequently paint my frustration.

Artistic Influences:

To say who or what are my artistic influences is difficult when some of us are searching for our own voice. I will say that I appreciate anything well done, in any period. If someone has taken the time and care to prepare a work then when I view it I cannot resist being influenced. Time, Past and Present carry a significant number of masters each communicating their influence. All this to say I currently enjoy studying Edward Hopper. Each day can be different.
