Jules Milhau

Jules Milhau is a French contemporary painter born in 2000 in Nîmes. A self-taught artist, he developed from an early age a pictorial universe deeply inspired by the Camargue region, Mediterranean culture, bullfighting, flamenco and the traditions of southern France. Drawing and painting since the age of three, he has made painting his preferred means of expression, creating a body of work where movement, music, color and emotion come together.

Recognized for his talent from adolescence, Jules Milhau gained attention in 2016 with his series “Cilouettes”, a tribute to his great-aunt, which also led to the publication of his first book, Cilou by Jules, prefaced by Nathalie Rykiel. The following year, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Galerie 37 in Aigues-Mortes, where he unveiled a collection of works dedicated to birds, bullfighters and silhouettes that would become emblematic of his artistic universe. His free and spontaneous visual language draws inspiration from the landscapes of the Camargue, horses, bulls, flamenco dancers and figures from Gypsy culture.

Working primarily with painting on canvas, Jules Milhau favors expressive gestures, intense colors and dynamic compositions that capture the rhythm and energy of his subjects. His work moves between contemporary figuration and simplified forms, giving prominence to movement, light and musicality. Flamenco, which he has practiced for many years, plays an essential role in his creative process and nourishes the intensity of his artistic expression.

His works have been presented in several exhibitions in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, as well as through events connected to the Venice Biennale. In 2025, the city of Nîmes commissioned him to create the official posters for the Pentecost and Harvest Ferias, confirming the institutional recognition of an artist whose work has already been praised for its maturity and originality despite his young age.

Today, Jules Milhau continues to develop a body of work deeply rooted in Mediterranean identity, where contemporary painting, Camargue culture, bullfighting, flamenco, color and visual poetry come together. His universe, both free, luminous and expressive, makes him one of the promising young figures of French contemporary painting.
