Description

This black and white photograph captures an intense moment, seen from behind, of a lone boxer facing the arena.

The dramatic lighting accentuates the muscular contours of his back, revealing both strength and vulnerability. The blurred background blends seamlessly, creating a sense of depth and drawing attention to his imposing figure.

The lack of facial details lends the image a universal quality, symbolizing the solitude and courage inherent in the preparation for battle. The contrast between light and shadow is superbly controlled, creating an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and timeless.

This work evokes determination and resilience, and combines the raw aesthetics of sport with introspective reflection, captivating the viewer's gaze and mind.

Richard Aujard, Portrait de Evander Holyfield
France  • 1966

Presentation

Richard Aujard was born in Hasparren in the Basque Country. At the age of 16, he became French inter-league motocross champion. Passionate about images, at 19 he was an assistant for the Vogue studio. He then decides to orient his objective towards new horizons. “Sophistication makes me uncomfortable, I like both strength and cracks in people,” he says to qualify his work. Richard moved to Australia. In Sydney, he meets a bunch of Bikers who, at the time, hit the headlines following a gang shootout. He then began his work on Moto Clubs. Photo magazine will publish a portfolio on this subject, which is taken up around the world. His meeting with Mickey Rourke will be decisive. He offers to come and settle at his home in Los Angeles and "sponsor" him on his work on Bikers and Boxing. At the same time, Richard met Eric Cantona. Richard becomes one of the regular photographers, of Eric and Mickey. A long artistic collaboration then began. From there, he set off to meet the Navajo, Hopi and Apache Indian tribes… Richard spent several months in total immersion in the Indian reserves of Wyoming, Dakota and Arizona. Then Richard goes on to a book on the Charros in Mexico. The French army (Sirpa) ordered a book from him on a portrait gallery of all his different contingents: he went from a submarine to the foreign legion… In 2008, Richard was part of the NTM adventure thanks to JoeyStarr who 'he has known for a long time. He published in the wake of the book "Supreme NTM, we are still there". Engaged with ACF (action against hunger), Richard went to Haiti in 2010 to witness the devastation of the earthquake. He then goes to meet the left behind, "the children of the trenches", bands of young people who live in the underground passages of Ulan Bator. He released a book on Mongolia, Nomad's Land, the cold shanty towns. Boxing enthusiast, Richard has published two Boxing & Champions books! on the great champions who have marked the history of Noble Art such as Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield, the brothers Tiozzo and Jake LaMotta "The Raging Bull" but also the very young, these seeds of champions. Most of the photos were taken in Las Vegas, at Caesar's Palace, the temple of boxing. Along with all these reports, Richard regularly photographs artists such as: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Béatrice Dalle, Eric Cantona, Woody Allen, Monica Bellucci, Asia Argento, Carla Bruni, Mike Tyson, Mickey Rourke, Tom Hardy, JoeyStarr, Jason Statham , Kirk Douglas… His photographs are regularly published in magazines such as Photo, Paris Match, Première, Studio CinéLive, SoFilm, Next-Liberation, Max, Blast, Les Inrocks, GQ (uk, Italia & France), Vanity Fair (Italia) ) ...
