Biography
Born in 1937 in Bradford, David Hockney is one of the greatest painters of the Twentieth Century, he is the precursor of digital art. A big fan of the English countryside, specially in Yorkshire, where he grew up and agitated London, David Hockey dedicated his first works to London. In 1960, he entered the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and was noticed during an exhibition in London dedicated to young British contemporary artists. From Pop to Figurative and then back to Realism, David Hockey does not belong to any movement in particular, which confirms his famous statement "I paint what i want to paint, when I feel like it, where I want". Againts contemporary movements, Hockney stands out for his ultramodern techniques and his bright colored palette. His gallerist, John Kasmin, describes him as an insolent artist, a big observer with incredible technical skills in issues of space, volume and light combined with an evident pleasure for the narrative. A flight to Italy, Swiss landscapes, a road trip with friends, he is a thoughful man loves reflecting, the pièces titled " We Snared two Boys" speaks for itself... what makes his work stand out is the link between painting and writting, the game alternating color painted with the most diverses techniques and the roughness of his canvases. In the middle of the 60s, his painting became more realistic and proclaimed the pleasure of living in a homosexual environment, as is the case in the Californian society. When he moved to California in 1978, his friend Warhol encouraged him to make a collection focused in Pools, which was a big succes, the most famous piece being " A bigger splash" this pieces can be found at the Tate Gallery in London since 1981. Hockney's work plunges us in the Californian athmosphere; which we know by its blue and clear skies, plam trees, modern houses, summer colors and pastel blue pools. Hockney works as well with Polaroid photographs by capturing and assembling different perspectives of a landscapes in order to increase the spatial effect. Loving above all handmade images, Hockey remakes some of his photographs with paint and creates this way an ambiguity in his photocollages. His first big project of photocollage called "The Bigger Grand Canyon" was released in 1998 and depicts the immensity of this natural site on 60 different canvases. From image digitalization to scanning of photographs, David Hockey is a very versatile artist who likes using a variety of artistic supports. He is as well one of the first to use paint on Ipad and IPhone and assures to still want to train himself in new artistic techniques.
