Dominique Bertrand

Born in: 1925

Translation in progress

Dominique Bertrand was born in Paris in 1925, and decided at age 15 to become a painter against his family’s wishes.

He joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in 1944, where he studied under Fauvist painter Othon Friesz. After illustrating Charles Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal, he was hired by Lucien Vogel for Le Jardin des Modes in 1946, and was a layout artist for the magazine until its publication ended in 1971.

He then worked as an independent tapestry painter for Margot, Grenet, Blondel, D.M.C. and Steiner, until 1975. Since then and almost until his death in 2015, he dedicated his life to painting. During his career, his work was exhibited 47 times, including, regularly, at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d’Automne, and in 14 personal exhibitions.

His paintings are figurative, intimate, with an expressionist tendency. Despite the success of his exhibitions, Dominique Bertrand took no heed of fashionable styles and developed his own universe, away from existing conventions. He took his inspiration from the poetry of daily life.
