Description
Fountain (2024) by Zakhar Shevchuk captures the fleeting vitality of a city fountain, while simultaneously unsettling the viewer with its charged palette. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting depicts the rising spray and cascading waters with vigorous, almost explosive brushwork. Streaks of blue, white, and turquoise dominate the surface, conveying the visual and physical energy of water in constant motion.
At the base of the fountain, one can discern simplified silhouettes of human figures, rendered loosely and almost ghost-like. These figures serve as a counterpoint to the towering water structure, their anonymity emphasizing the sense of transience and the fragile scale of humanity in contrast to nature’s force.
Shevchuk deliberately destabilizes the composition through his choice of color. Amidst the cool tones of water, sharp strokes of yellow and green erupt into the canvas, introducing an element of tension. What at first glance might appear celebratory becomes subtly disquieting – a reminder that beauty and unease often coexist.
This ambiguity reflects Shevchuk’s broader artistic practice, where perception is never fixed and the line between observation and psychological interpretation remains fluid. The fountain, a familiar urban symbol of leisure and refreshment, is reimagined as something more complex: a metaphor for human fragility, fleeting pleasure, and the uneasy energy of modern life.
The result is a painting that straddles abstraction and figuration, seduction and disturbance, offering collectors both visual dynamism and layered meaning.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
