Emmanuel Barcilon was born in Paris, in 1967. He graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Cercy in 1992. Since then, he has been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions in Paris, London, Basel, New York and Amsterdam. Emmanuel Barcilon's paintings are spaces of paradoxes: the smooth and the engraved, the precise collage and the taste for the gestural, the lacquered monochrome and a mass of drips which streak the figurations, the surface and the depth, the drawing and the color. Everything that was conceived as an opposition, two distinct character traits, is found united in the body of the painting. Barcilon's works echo the practices of photography, revelation and fixation. He brings up the light and the colors after having hidden them for a while. He rediscovers them, by chance or by choice, it depends, but otherwise. His act of painting is thought of as a progression and made of successive variations until the final agreement: the fixation of revelations. In each work, the reflexivity of the support, dotted with slight revelations, echoes the painter's research who ends up finding, in the forgotten layers, the right gap, the right window in the colors. In seeking surprise, he finds his chance, the fleeting beauty of the being of the painting. As he hollows out his support and its surface, he makes the painting's memory his strength, lacquers of memories. The painting clearly evokes the presence of its own history, traces of which we can see on the fringes of the support: drips of all the colors used, nearly thirty layers. The painting is the result of a process of individualization of the work, "step by step" accumulation, "layer upon layer" stratification, which aims to open the senses of the beholder: to give the sensations of touch , harsh skin, scars, burns, and at the same time, velvety skin, caresses, softness of colors; then produce sounds, noises, music. The eye touches and listens as much as it sees. Here, on the surface, the artist's body and worries are expressed on this projected skin, the painting, where, in a singular colored speckled chaos, both moles and hives appear. Childhood vandalisms operate like clumsy signatures on a blank sheet or on the pages of an illustrated book. After the doodles come the first body drawings and the writing of the name. And the vandalism of graffiti engraves on the walls of the cities anger of letters against the architecture. These moments of instinctive attacks are part of the pictorial language of Emmanuel Barcilon.

Emmanuel Barcilon

France Born in: 1967
Emmanuel Barcilon born in Paris in 1967, graduated in 1992 from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Cergy. Since then he has had numerous exhibitions in galleries at art fairs and museums. His work has been showed in Paris, London, Basel and New York. And now we are proud to add Amsterdam to this list.

Barcilons work consists of layers of varnish mixed with pure pigments, often in bright colours. In these layers he scratches texts, adds drawings and makes use of collage. His intense use of colour, often bright and luminous, may contrast with the highly emotional texts and at times disturbing images.

Due to the reflective varnished surface the viewer becomes aware of his own presence. But the closer one gets, the more details become visible representing the mood of the artist; a landscape of joy, anger, doubt, hope and frustration.
