Yagor

Cote D'Ivoire Born in: 1981

Yagor was born in Grand Bassam in Ivory Coast, he graduated in visual arts from the School of Fine Arts in Luminy. Originally from Abidjan, he lives and works in Marseille.

Yagor takes a critical look at the “me-I" society, saturated with consumer products. In Africa, today's youth no longer seek their salvation in gratuitous violence and artificial paradises, but now dig in open-air garbage cans, in the remains of others, in search of treasures that could provide them with a best daily. In this world, every day is a chance to be seized in the game of chance of life, as if you had to try your luck at all costs.

It is this extremely destitute youth of society, idle and without landmarks, who have become a real player in an informal, toxic and dangerous recycling system, named by the artist "The zombie generation", that he stages in this series of paintings placed under the theme of "Trash Hunter" (The trash hunters).

His work challenges us not only on the future of the planet from an ecological point of view, but also on the unbearable gap that exists between the North and the South - the rich nations and the poor nations - a fact that he denounces with brutality. Not content with frantically consuming, or even over-consuming, today's behavior depletes the planet's resources, polluting it all the more so as the most toxic packaging and waste are most of the time sent to the poorest. .

Yagor's painting is uncompromising, raw, on canvas ... we see children playing among the waste, juggling lotto tickets and empty packaging of abandoned toys, behind entire walls of containers that carry these poisonous and poisonous goods. "The zombies" are their happy and sad playmates, black figures in a burst of cheerful colors.

His style is located at the crossroads of several influences: abstract art, raw art, symbolic art, singular art and realism. The artist depicts and denounces the difficult human conditions. He makes his paintings on raw canvases with invoice receipts, newspaper, lotto tickets, bags of rice or cement ... and many other everyday objects that have already been used.

By playing in Agbogbloshie's* bins, "these zombies" play, without knowing it, with their health: life is lottery!

*Agbogbloshie is a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana, known to be a legal and illegal destination for waste electrical and electronic equipment from industrialized countries, which has been the subject of several documentaries, photographic surveys, and texts showing the ravages on the population and especially on children.
