  • About the artwork

The unique figurative works of German artist Gerhard Völkle combine sculpture, installation, and classic figurative painting to create artworks that come to life through the process of oxidation. A connection to the Spanish island of Lanzarote and a fascination with its ubiquitous volcanic rock formations has long been reflected in his artworks. Völkle incorporates real rust in his mixed media artworks. Völkle uses rust as an aesthetic surface, as a representative of historical past and a symbol of naturalness, weathering, corrosion and decay.

This 9 inch tall by 7 inch wide original steel artwork on board is framed, wired and ready to hang. Völkle used his signature rust painting technique to create this silhouetted figurative artwork. It is signed by the artist on the front of the painting. Free local Los Angeles area delivery and free professional installation in the local Los Angeles area is included, including placement and hardware. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping is available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.

Völkle uses his rust painting technique in both sculptures and on canvas. The employment of rust as a medium allows oxidation to take over each artwork and consequently creates an unpredictable, ever-changing surface. Each media shows dynamic characters in a variety of poses and in various states of movement. The artist uses the absence of detail and an unconventional media that is always changing to emphasize silhouetted characters that are also in perpetual motion.

Gerhard Völkle was born 1953 in Lörrach, Germany and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, Switzerland. Since 2001 his work has been exhibited in France, Switzerland, and Germany. Notable collectors include New Zealand businessman Graeme Hart, and actor Jesse Tylor Ferguson. Gerhard Völkle lives and works in Binzen, Germany.

Translation in progress

Gerhard Völkle was born in 1953 in
Lörrach, Germany.
After completing his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule
in Basel, he studied at the Kunstakademie in Bad Reichenhall. Inspired by the
volcanic rocks in the Spanish island of Lanzarote, he began painting with
rust.  The unpredictability of the
oxidation make his work dynamic and allows them to change and evolve overtime.

The connection to the island of
Lanzarote and the fascination with the volcanic rock found there, has long been
reflected in Völkle’s process. In his most recent works, which are created
under the series "Rust traces - Colored Oxidations", he turns his
attention more to the colors and the fire spewing from Lanzarote's mountains.

Völkle uses his rust painting technique in both sculptures
and on canvas.  The employment of rust as
a medium allows oxidation to take over each artwork and consequently creates an

Since 2001 his work has been exhibited in France,
