Présentation

Charles is a young artist from Los Angeles. He began painting landscapes and seascapes at the age of 7. His current work, 3D presentations of replica guns mounted and treated with various techniques, inspires the viewer to consider gun violence, its impact on our children and the poignant voice they raise.

In 2011, at 9 years old, Charles wrapped his own toy rifle in newspaper clippings of violence, and mounted it on a canvas layered with similar news articles. “I saw that there was a lot of violence happening in the world – this seemed like a way to say to adults that kids don’t have to feel as scared as I did – that being at school shouldn't be scary or dangerous,” says Charles.

Charles took his artwork to the streets of New York in Soho on West Broadway, Venice Beach, California on the Venice boardwalk and West Hollywood at Melrose and Fairfax. Selling from his sidewalk stand and talking to people enamored by his enthusiasm, gripping artwork and universal message Charles sold over 50 pieces to clients from all over the United States as well as Italy, Australia and Canada.
Charles' gun art has evolved into a sharp style – multicolored and monochromatic – brightly colored as well as somber. He purposely camouflages the gun with an abstract design of acrylic paint in primary colors applied by a spring-loaded toy air rifle and other techniques. His work pays homage to the artists he respects and admires and who have influenced his love of art, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and others.

In December 2013, Charles’ 3D Gun Art exhibit in Miami triggered international recognition during Art Basel Miami Beach.
Charles lives in Woodland Hills, California with his parents, older brother and two dogs. He appreciates the many trips that he has taken with his family to art fairs and museums. When he is not doing his art or homework, Charles is an avid skateboarder and enjoys playing flag football and video games.

“My feelings about guns are that they are scary and dangerous. When I make one of my pieces, I create a background and then I camouflage the gun to make it almost invisible. The gun is still there but it’s hard to see, or you don’t see it for what it really is. Hopefully, my art will get people talking about guns, gun safety and gun violence. I wish that guns were only in an art gallery.”
- Charles Gitnick, June 2012
