Presentation

Young self-taught artist, having received many awards such as Hou Dengke Documentary Photograph Award 2015, the Special Jury Prize of the Bourse du Talent 2016, and included in the collection of the National Library of France. By his strict practice and acts of resistance, Liu Tao tries to create a powerful work, which follows the Chinese dissent vanguard in art.

Inspired by the performers of East Village, Dong Cun in Beijing, as in the 90s Zhang Huan and Ma Liuming aspired to freedom by walking naked on the Great Wall, Liu Tao offers his personal roaming in the New China, as he plunges into the suburbs of Shanghai and Beijing, leaving cities for doubtful trails that combine dreaming and melancholy. Liu Tao inspires and aspires to a renewed Romanticism, and ventures far from what the new world keeps for him.

He fulfills his mission to awaken consciences by engaging physically in the creation of his work and opens up the field for reflection on the rapidly expanding globalized society that redefines the new China: Making a real elegy to the flood, through crossing and re-crossing Chinese cities as they radically mutate, what will become of Man, of his culture, of the traditions that define him?
