Geometric Self-Portrait
Arthur Hent composes his works from simple shapes—lines, squares, circles, and dots—arranged and repeated according to precise rules.
Through this process, he expresses energy and emotion within a structured composition.
This artwork transforms the rigidity of the chessboard into an organic structure, where forms expand and come to life.

Since 2009, Arthur Hent has developed a geometric language to translate his inner states through simple forms and rule-based systems. His work is grounded in a deliberately restrained approach, where minimalism becomes a way to explore subtle emotions.
His process is guided by a custom-designed algorithm that informs—rather than replaces—his hand. Each drawing follows a precise protocol, while preserving the fragility of the gesture and the unpredictability of the moment. The result is a series of structured compositions in which the line becomes a central element—at once form, movement, and energy.
His practice seeks to capture the emotions and energies that pass through him, by engaging directly with the flow of the gesture, without relying on words or familiar images. Drawing thus becomes a way of questioning, over time, what defines his identity.
Influenced by both ancient visual cultures—particularly the Lapita patterns he encountered during a formative stay in New Caledonia—and the logic of contemporary systems, Arthur Hent situates his work within a dialogue between human gesture and algorithmic thinking.
His works, created on paper or canvas, emphasize simplicity of means and precision of line. They are now held in private collections in France and internationally, and were notably featured in a publication by the Benetton Foundation.
