Spotlight Artists:
Mau Mau
Mau Mau is a British artist who skillfully combines influences from high and low cultures, in what are often humorous, although always critically incisive slices of social commentary. Through his whimsical and playful artworks, Mau Mau creates deeply critical and metaphorical art which tackles our contemporary world. He brilliantly combines political, environmental, and cultural commentary in his work – usually perfectly blended with his trademark character of a mischievous and fun-loving Fox.
Mau Mau presents fresh air and a new approach to the art world. He has been creating for more than two decades and making people question our everyday reality.
His jolly artworks are tricking the viewers into contemplating the underlying seriousness of his messages about capitalism, advertising, politics, and our contemporary society. He has been painting all around the world, and his artworks can be found on literally everything, from shipwrecks and surfboards to billboards and walls in the cities. Mau Mau is using the power of art to relay messages of social importance. Today, his brilliant artworks present a powerful critique of globalization, capitalism, mass media, and fake news.
Mau Mau has produced work for World Land Trust, Greenpeace, Surfers Against Sewage, and the Glastonbury Festival, and for record companies such as Ninja Tunes and Lowlife Records. He is the architect of cult brands Sewerside Boardwear and Fear Trade. His street work can also be seen all over the world including in the UK, Jamaica, Thailand, and Australia. He has had sold-out exhibitions in the UK, Japan and Thailand.
Mr. Brainwash
Mr. Brainwash, the pseudonym for Thierry Guetta is a Pop Artist, street artist and videographer whose graffiti and contemporary pieces have become highly prized by collectors. Mr. Brainwash was born in Garges-lès-Gonesse, Paris, France, but relocated to Los Angeles when he was fifteen. The artist attended Fairfax High School for about a year, but later dropped out and began to organize events around Hollywood.
Mr. Brainwash later delved into business and sold vintage clothes in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, making substantial money in the process. His interest in graffiti was spurred by a visit to France in 1999, where he learned that his cousin was the infamous street artist Space Invader. Having developed a knack for filming, Mr. Brainwash started to record the nightly escapades of Invader and other street artists, such as Shepard Fairey and the mysterious Zevs. At that time, there were no plans to release the videos documenting the graffiti artists at work.
In 2009, Mr. Brainwash met with Banksy and assisted him in launching his Los Angeles show Barely Legal. The two artists afterwards decided to make a documentary detailing life in the secretive graffiti art scene. The documentary would include shots of Invader taken by Banksy and Mr. Brainwash himself. The result was the Oscar-nominated documentary Exit through the Gift Shop, which debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film depicts the meteoric rise of Mr. Brainwash in the street art scene. Following the success of the film, Mr. Brainwash gained massive following with his exhibitions such as the one held at the Opera Gallery, London.
Kaws
The Brooklyn-based artist KAWS (Brian Donnelly) was born in New Jersey, in 1974.
His paintings, drawings, and sculpture have been widely exhibited at museums and art galleries. He is internationally known also as a graphic artist and a creator of highly sought-after, editioned toys, apparel, and other products.
KAWS grew up in Jersey City, where he emerged as a graffiti artist in the early 1990s. He later studied at the School of Visual Arts (1993-1996), where he shifted his focus to creating public “interventions” by subverting imagery on billboards and advertisements in bus shelters and phone booths. This led to collaborations with commercial photographers and designers, resulting in original artworks that have been extensively published. KAWS comfortably straddles the commercial and fine art worlds with his work, which ranges from graphic, product, and industrial design to painting, drawings, sculpture, wall murals, and silkscreen prints.
Working in the historical continuum of Pop Art, his recent paintings present abstracted cartoon imagery, making reference to both popular culture and the history of modern painting. Alternating between figuration and abstraction, KAWS’s work reflects the chaotic nature of contemporary culture.
