Evgenia Makarova

United Kingdom • 1984

My paintings resist coherence, operating at the intersection of fluid gesture and imposed structure.

Biography

Evgenia Makarova is a contemporary abstract artist based in Aylesbury, United Kingdom. Her practice explores the tension between intuitive gesture and imposed structure, creating paintings that exist in a state of visual instability and unresolved balance.

She holds an MA in Graphic Design from Syktyvkar State University, a background that informs her sensitivity to systems, visual codes, and compositional logic. Working primarily in acrylic and oil, Evgenia builds layered surfaces where color behaves as movement rather than form—fluid, atmospheric, and immersive.

These painterly fields are interrupted by linear marks, repetitive signs, and coded elements that resist full integration. Rather than resolving the image, these interventions disrupt it, creating a dialogue between softness and control, immersion and interference. Her work unfolds as a negotiation between multiple visual languages that coexist without merging.

Evgenia’s paintings reflect on the instability of perception and the limits of visual coherence. The viewer is invited into a space where meaning remains open, fragmented, and constantly shifting—mirroring contemporary experience shaped by overlapping systems, signals, and interruptions.

Her work has been widely exhibited internationally, including presentations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, and the United States. Notable exhibitions include Abstraction at Manifold Global Art Gallery (USA) and Female Gaze at Galerie Am Roten Hof (Austria). She has been shortlisted for The Bath Open Art Prize (UK) and the Fresh Legs Award (Berlin), and received an Honored Mention at J. Mane Gallery (USA).

Her works are held in private collections across the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States.

Through a layered language of gesture and disruption, Evgenia Makarova creates paintings that resist resolution—inviting viewers to engage with ambiguity, tension, and the shifting nature of perception.
