Groucho uses humor to point out that television is a source of distraction or even superficial entertainment. The phrase “very educational" is ironic, suggesting that, in reality, television does not provide deep or enriching knowledge, but is a form of leisure that distracts.
By saying that he goes to another room to read a book every time someone turns on the television, Groucho highlights the preference for reading as a more enriching, stimulating, and valuable activity for the mind.
