Edna De Araraquara

Brazil • 1955

Biography

Edna's first exposure to art was at 17, at the atelier of naïve artist Zé Cordeiro, whom she married. In 1997, she exhibited for the first time in the group show Mitos e Lendas do Brasil in São Bernardo, São Paulo.

Her international career began in 1982 with the exhibition Mito e Magia del Colore in Naples, Italy. In 1980, she and her husband moved to Campinas and opened the Casa de Arte Brasileira, a mixture of home, painting studio, school, and art gallery which brought much vitality to the local art scene until its closing in 1990.

In 1990, Edna and Zé Cordeiro travelled to Paris to carry out a joint exhibition at Maison de l'Unesco. They became acquainted with the landscape of Minho and Alentejo in Portugal, where they eventually settle. Edna participated in an impressive number of shows in several European countries, among which is a group show at Mont-Serrat Art Gallery in New York (1996) and another one at Thompson's Art Gallery in London (1997). She met the challenge of painting a 1.50 x 2.50 metre panel for the exhibition Cascais Expo 98, featuring 20 artists from Portugal (1998). Edna and Zé Cordeiro held one more joint exhibition at Galeria de Arte Almatea in Madrid (2000). Several shows were set up abroad in places such as Canada, France, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Cabo Verde, Beirut and the United Arab Emirates. In 2010, she decided to return to Brazil. The artist currently lives in her birthplace Araraquara.
