Presentation

Born in Strasbourg in 1938, François Bruetschy grew up in Mulhouse. He lives in La Garde Adhemar, a dreamlike oasis near Montelimar. He went to the Ecole Municipale des Beaux Arts. In 1958, he went to Paris to improve his art, especially at the Atelier de la Grande Chaumière. In 1959, he was admitted at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d’Art, in the technical section of construction and interior decoration. He stayed there until 1962. From 1963 until 1992, he worked in an architect office.

François Bruetschy, originally from Alsace, mainly known for graphic designing, began with drawing and acquired a taste for shapes. He became interested by color due to his love for music: world music, jazz, classic...But when he begins a new painting, "it's in complete silence. It's only after I have finished working that I play some music...It's very interesting to listen to silence, in fact it's a luxury".

The transition from figurative to non-figurative took place through a collage. At the beginning, due to his profession in architecture, he expressed anger in his paintings while he denounced mistakes. "I built buildings, public housing and I wasn't enthusiastic about the system and the construction mistakes. At the start, when I was in front of my paintings, I unleashed my nervousness, my holler"!.

Then there was peace, François Bruetschy created his own language "in this freedom of research and aesthetic perfection', language creates abstract, poetic and fragmented landscapes, "My paintings are designed like territories in which I offer a certain flow'. Today, François Bruetschy is an intellectual painter more than ever, however he is more committed to the idea of hope.
