Pablo Picasso: Ceramics

From the beginning of his career, Picasso displayed a great artistic versatility and love for different mediums. After his death, more than 3,200 ceramics were found on the artist's estate. His passion for ceramics began in 1946, when he was 60 years old, and by the end of his life it is estimated he created 3,500 pieces.

His creations vary from functional plates and bowls to vases and pitchers with unique shapes and playful subjects, such as animals and mythological creatures. Known for his desire to experiment, Picasso loved pottery for the creative potential it had, and was eager to experiment with the medium. The artist's iconic cubist style is visible within his ceramics, but he particularly enjoyed trying to combine the aesthetics of his art with the practicality of a household object.

Over the past 10 years, the market for Picasso's ceramics has been steadily increasing, with interest coming from both seasoned collectors and new buyers, being amongst the most affordable of Picasso's works. In fact, when the artist began creating them in collaboration with Madoura Pottery Workshop, he said he wanted them to be affordable and accessible to the layman.
