Armand Avril

Armand Avril, born in Lyon in 1926, is a painter living in Cotignac in the Var. He is best known for the assemblages he created from 1968 onwards. Of modest origins, however very early interested in art and museums where his father encouraged him, he first tried his hand at painting. However, Avril didn't begin to find her true style until she was forty-two.

As a child, he was a regular at the museums of Lyon, which he frequented on the advice of his father. As an adult, his passion for collecting encouraged him to nourish himself with primitive arts and artists like Gaston Chaissac or Boris Bojnev. His works and techniques connect him to the family of recuperative creators like Louise Nevelson (1899-1986) or the artists of the Dada movement and their successors. He also shares with his Dadaist predecessors a desire to free himself from current ideological and artistic conventions.

He cannot be linked to a single artistic movement because he was inspired by all the artists who surrounded him during his life. This diversity then allows him to create a true artistic universe specific to the artist who is known for his cork montages including the works "Mer à Cassis" started in 1970.
