Biography

Nicole Gaulier was born in 1940. Renowned stylist, her first works put her in the movement of Fiber Art and, from the mid-1970s, she participated in the main exhibitions that marked this movement. It renews the art of embroidery with works in homage to Annie Albers and Sonia Delaunay, where both color and material prevail. Resistant to common ideas and traditional means of painting, she developed a large number of tools that will allow her to create a completely new pictorial work without the aid of any brushes. Thus, she has built up a series of glyphs, tools for producing and repeating patterns that are linked together and which constitute the elements of her vocabulary. Always using pure and lively paints, she creates immense paintings very heavy with all the repeated layers of her motifs, causing singular colored vibrations. Recognized as an artist of Fiber Art, she is present in all the works dedicated to it and, for her painting, her works have been shown extensively: from Osaka in Japan to the Center Pompidou in Paris, through the museums of Lille and Belgium, historic textile temples.
