Antonio Calderara (Abbiategrasso, 1903 - Vacciago, 1978)


Self-taught and changeable artist, he has a figurative debut to then approach the artistic movement of the Italian twentieth century.


In 1954 the study of Mondrian's work led him first to the study of light and then to a progressive loss of the landscape reference, increasingly moving towards an aniconic expressive form that saw him participate in European research, above all of German origin. In his autobiography he traces the first non-figurative painting to 1959.


Throughout his life, almost entirely spent in isolation near Lake Orta, he wondered about the role of light and color in an attempt to answer the question: what is painting?
