Presentation
In October, Corps er Âme Gallery presents the artist Nikita in an exhibition devoted to his portraits painted on old tapestries from the 19th and 20th centuries. Indeed, one of the peculiarities of this 37-year-old Montpellier is to use a wide variety of media for her works. After her first oils on canvas, she met the artist SWEO and joined the Street-Art group “the 5.7 crew”. Thanks to these encounters, his art developed in the street, on or in public, private or abandoned buildings. Many fresco projects make it known; in particular, she painted two of the walls of the Quai du Verdanson in Montpellier (see opposite). With training as a decorative artist and a large part of self-taught learning, Nikita has imposed, in the world of Street Art as on her paintings, a very personal universe. This universe is reminiscent of that of Comics and Comics, or that of Tim Burton by his characters with big eyes, with a Japanese side rather inspired by manga. Her portraits are those of strong women, warriors, but very feminine with soft and expressive faces, sometimes colorful and sometimes close to black and white. In the rather masculine world of Street-Art, she puts forward her own femininity, thus standing out to become an emblematic artist of the group, and recognized by her peers. His spray and brush creations show remarkable thoroughness. By dint of working with light and shadow, she comes to realize works in 3D, deceiving perspectives, pushing the physical limits of her workplaces. She thus goes in search of atypical or underground places to develop her anamorphoses in 3D. For her portraits of women also, Nikita uses various and sometimes very original supports. The “Transparences” exhibition in October also shows his exceptional work on old tapestries. Unhooked in castles, convicts or other old buildings, these tapestries, then installed on canvases, are the support for a series of female portraits. Nikita plays in her portraits with transparency, letting the viewer see both her work and her medium. She thus gives great importance and a new look to these old motifs.
