Biography

Born Gemma Annick Edmonde Harbulot on March 23, 1937, in Nouméa, Gemmanick is a New Caledonian symbolist painter of Irish descent.
Descending from two major pioneering families of the territory, she grew up between New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. At the age of twelve, she discovered painting, initially inspired by Pacific landscapes and the mining world where her family worked.

In 1963, the loss of her brother marked a decisive turning point: she abandoned realism to create a personal pictorial language she called Nuances—a sensitive, spiritual, and vibrant universe. Her first exhibitions in Nouméa in 1965 and 1969 were met with immediate success. Spotted by Seiji Tōgō, a member of the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts, she exhibited in 1971 at the Nichido Gallery on the Ginza. In 1973, her painting Aquarescence won the Grand Prix at the Nika Kai salon. Following Tōgō's advice, she moved to Paris in 1975; there, David de Rothschild acquired one of her works. In 1977, her painting Carnaval sous la mer was turned into an Aubusson tapestry, making her the first artist from the French overseas territories to be woven at Aubusson.
