Biography
Sophie Jouve is a French artist whose atypical path has led her from teaching to a life entirely dedicated to artistic creation. Born in an environment steeped in a rich artistic heritage – between her grandparents' antique shop and her grandfather's painting studio – she first worked as an English teacher before reconnecting with her first loves.
Exploration of light and transparency
After several years of glass work – through fusing and blowing – Sophie Jouve sought to transpose the transparency and luminosity of glass into her painting. She has since developed a personal technique using inks, gold and silver pigments on cotton paper, giving birth to abstract and dreamlike landscapes where light and matter meet and intertwine.
A dance between mastery and letting go
Her creative process gives prominence to chance and spontaneity. Water and pigments interact directly with the paper, merging in often unpredictable ways. Sophie Jouve describes her process as a transformation of energy and imagination into matter, where each work evolves freely and intuitively.
A language of lines and circles
Her compositions often revolve around two symbolic geometric elements: the line and the circle. The horizontal line evokes a horizon – an opening to infinity – while the circle acts as a window or a telescope, framing the viewer's gaze and inviting them to an intimate contemplation. These recurring forms reinforce the meditative and poetic dimension of her work.
Art as an invitation to contemplation
Sophie Jouve's works evoke imaginary landscapes, emotional territories, and fluid energies. They invite the viewer to reshape the elements of the world, to build new, unreal, and yet possible spaces – spaces to which one can believe, even for a moment. Her works are an invitation to slow down, to reflect, and to reconnect with the invisible.
