Biography

Amir Roti, whose real name is Pierre-Amir Sassone, is a French sculptor and visual artist born in 1988. Raised by a family of sculptors and marble masons, he grew up surrounded by raw materials from a very young age. During his adolescence, he immersed himself in urban culture and began painting graffiti under the pseudonym "ROTI". Driven by a passion for material craftsmanship, he simultaneously pursued a rigorous training as a traditional stonecutter. This dual identity allowed him to contribute to the restoration of prestigious historic monuments, such as the Saint-Jacques Tower, while developing a unique artistic approach that fuses the energy of street art with the nobility of classical sculpture.

This dialogue between street activism and academic art took on a major international dimension in January 2014, during the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine. In the heart of Kyiv, amidst the barricades of Maidan Square, Amir Roti performed a striking action by clandestinely installing a monumental 4-ton sculpture titled "To the New Ukraine." Carved under extreme winter conditions, this artwork depicts the face of a woman emerging from the water, inspired by a singer from the Ukrainian band Dakh Daughters. By placing this marble bust in the middle of the uprising, the artist transformed classical sculpture into an immediate political and poetic act, symbolizing the rebirth and hope of the Ukrainian people.

Whether carving anonymous faces directly onto wild rock faces or intervening at the heart of contemporary crises, his monumental creations constantly play on the striking contrast between the softness of human lines and the harshness of stone. Through his work, the artist poetically explores the notions of time, memory, and legacy. Today, Amir Roti is internationally recognized as a key figure bridging ancient craft and contemporary urban creation.
