Presentation
Michel Castaignet was born in 1971 and today he lives and works between Paris and Chaumont. He studied in London at the University of Middlesex and he holds a Master's Degree in Aesthetics and Art Theory (2001).
Michel Castaignet creates series of paintings that interrogate the memory and the fragmentation of the world. His figurative paintings find their source in a collection amateur photos. The images are used as a raw, polysemic material capable of constituting or illustrating subjects that are often melancholic, behind their apparent playfulness.
His style places him apart from the French narrative figuration of the '70s but his artistic education in London explains the bad painting influences in his works. There was a stage in his work close to a ironic fairyland in a Dubossarsky / Vinogradov style, that evolved recently toward a more simple and poetic universe. He has represented France at the Biennale of Vienna in 2006.
"I tried to get to the point more directly, I seek an aporia, I do not seek an effect or tricks; I see the image as a memory which of which we only recall the situation and some details. The banality of the photographs I uses gives a universal character to the characters that I present." Michel Castaignet
