Born in
Mintauban in 1982, the plastic artist Nicolas Giraud – alias 100Taur – now lives and works in Toulouse, where he has
a workshop in the suburban Saint-Oreans-de-Gameville.

Painter, sculptor,
and graffiti artist: 100Taur’s rich creative universe is unique. Although he
started off studying classical applied art at the Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, he
has what he describes as a visceral need for pure technique. In this regard, he
was lucky to meet the artist-engraver Marc Dautry, who shares his worldview and
went on to become his mentor. Under his tutelage, Giraud learnt a huge array of
pictorial techniques which transformed him into a fully rounded artist. He
later joined the underground ‘Low Brow’ movement that was flourishing in San
Francisco.

100Taur’s art is
also strongly influenced by the greats of the 20th century, primarily Francis
Bacon and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Literature is also an important source of
inspiration for him – from comics to the writings of Edgar Allen Poe – but it’s
mythology that remains central to his creativity. Giraud chose his pseudonym
100Taur in reference to the chimerical centaur Chiron, who he had an obsession
with throughout his childhood.

This interest in monsters reverberates strongly
in all of his work to this day. Keeping Goya’s famous saying ‘the sleep of
reason produces monsters’ in mind, 100Taur’s canvases are inhabited by
fantastical hybrid beings, crosses between humans and strange, otherworldly
animals.

Despite the
apparent repulsiveness of his creature, it is impossible not to appreciate them
– even find them quite endearing as the artist plays on the notions of
difference and innocence in his pieces. 100Taur has a gift for presenting a softer
view of our childhood monsters, making them appear far less frightening than we
remember them.

Nature also has a central part in the artistic universe
and creative process of Giraud. He uses lots of wood in his creations, but also
draws significant inspiration from his immediate environment, closely observing
the evolution of colours across the seasons. Born into a family of medics, he
is also fascinated by the human body and taxidermy, which is evident in many of
his pieces.
