Philippe Hérard, born in 1966 in Châlons-en-Champagne, is a contemporary French painter, also recognized as a street artist for his poetic urban interventions and collages created in public space. He has dedicated himself to painting since adolescence and has developed a unique universe over several decades where figurative art, street art, humor, poetry, and reflection on the human condition meet. His works, mainly created in acrylic on canvas, are presented in galleries as well as in various shows in France and abroad.
Philippe Hérard's artistic practice is based on the creation of anonymous characters, often depicted with faded or concealed gazes, who become the protagonists of scenes that are both simple, absurd, and deeply human. Starting from fragile and endearing silhouettes, the artist questions behaviors, emotions, and the paradoxes of existence. His figures seem to evolve in a world of unstable balance, oscillating between freedom and confinement, softness and anxiety, mockery and depth, inviting the viewer to a reading that is both intimate and universal.
Since 2009, Philippe Hérard has enriched his pictorial work by developing his characters on paper, which he directly pastes onto the walls of Paris and other cities. These urban collage interventions place his work in the tradition of contemporary street art and transform public space into a meeting place between the work and the passerby. His anonymous characters then appear as narrative fragments installed in the city, provoking surprise, smiles, and questioning about human nature.
Philippe Hérard's universe is marked by a poetic, dreamlike, and sometimes absurd aesthetic. His compositions stage twisted situations where solitude, the desire for escape, daydreaming, and the search for balance occupy an essential place. His work explores the tensions between individual and society, reality and imaginary, everyday life and the extraordinary. Each work functions as a short visual story, leaving the viewer the freedom to interpret the gestures and attitudes of these characters outside of time.
Associated with the movements of new figuration, street art, and contemporary figurative painting, Philippe Hérard develops an immediately recognizable signature through his minimalist and expressive characters. His artistic approach favors a direct relationship with the public, using humor and poetry as means to address universal themes related to identity, emotions, and human relationships.
His work has been presented in various exhibitions and artistic events, notably at the Galerie Appartelier with the exhibition "Cuvée urbaine" in 2024. His works continue to be exhibited in specialized galleries for contemporary art and street art, confirming his place among the French artists who are renewing the relationship between painting, public space, and visual narration.
Through his paintings and urban collages, Philippe Hérard proposes a sensitive and humanistic vision of the contemporary world. His work captivates through its ability to transform ordinary situations into symbolic images, where each character becomes a reflection of our own questioning. Between urban poetry, contemporary figuration, and engaged artistic expression, Philippe Hérard builds a visual language that is accessible, emotional, and deeply personal.
