Biography
After studying at the National Higher School of Decorative Arts of Paris and opening his first workshop in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1949, he settled in 1959 near Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye in Nièvre, the mecca of ceramic tradition.
His work in raw stoneware, which plays on the effect of pyrite grains within the material (black points) can be linked to this tradition but his work distinguishes mainly by his researches on the purification of forms which ally stoneware, earthenware and porcelain.
His decorations were inspired by the gestural abstraction of the school of Paris and by the Far East aesthetics tending sometimes towards a extreme treatment with enamels and unicolour coverage.
Robert Deblander collaborated with the Manufacture de Sèvres in the 90s and proposed a vase prototype, conserved in the collections but it was never published.
