Gérard Rancinan

Gérard Rancinan, born in 1953 in Talence, in Gironde, is a major French photographer of contemporary photography. He begins his career very young in photojournalism before developing an artistic work dedicated to the critical observation of societal transformations. His experience as a reporter, particularly in contact with conflicts, riots, and major international events, nourishes a committed photography that questions violence, politics, popular culture, and contemporary behaviors.

Rancinan has progressively established himself through large staged photographic works, in which he détourns and reinterprets major references from art history. His work thus establishes correspondences between classical painting and contemporary imagination, notably by making his images dialogue with works by old masters. This approach is particularly visible in his series Métamorphoses and Trilogie des Modernes, created since 2005 with the writer Caroline Gaudriault. The latter constitutes a collection of over 70 photographs and revisits emblematic compositions such as The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault or The Thirty-Nine Daughters by Diego Velázquez, while integrating figures and objects from popular culture.

Self-taught, Gérard Rancinan favors staged photography, portraiture, and very large format photographic compositions. His aesthetic combines provocation, humor, burlesque, and détournement to construct spectacular images that confront the viewer with the changes of the contemporary world. Among his references are notably Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Jérôme Bosch, and Eugène Delacroix, some of whose compositions or themes are reinterpreted in his works.

His work has been exhibited in important international institutions, notably at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Triennale Museum in Milan, the Himalayas Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, as well as the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava. Artsy also lists his participation in Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present at the Brooklyn Museum in 2016.

Gérard Rancinan is also recognized for his numerous awards and for the important place he occupies in French contemporary photography. His work, situated at the border of photojournalism, portraiture, and contemporary art, offers a critical and spectacular reading of our time.
