Sergio Cardillo

Italy • 1987

Sergio Cardillo transforms still life into poetic landscapes of the soul, where muted colors, light, and silence evoke memory, solitude, and human experience.

Biography

Sergio Cardillo was born in Erice, Trapani, in 1987. He graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo, completing the two-year specialist program in Contemporary Sacred Art.

He has participated in numerous exhibition projects. In 2015, one of his works became part of the Bilotti Ruggi d’Aragona Collection. In 2016, he created a commissioned by Father Catalano, Prior of the Dominican community of Palermo, for the exhibition . In 2017, one of his paintings was selected for the international project , promoted by the Benetton Foundation. In 2018, as part of the Palermo/Riga/Vienna project, organized in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts and the Embassy of Latvia, he created a life portrait of the renowned Italian musicologist Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi.

Cardillo draws on the pictorial tradition of great masters such as Giorgio Morandi, reinterpreting it through his own highly personal visual language. Following his natural inclination towards contemplation, he paints mysterious, intimate, and almost meditative still lifes, using a repertoire of objects arranged on a single plane. Subdued color palettes and carefully modulated light create delicate shadows and an atmosphere of quiet suspension.

His paintings are visions, and his colors are imbued with memory. Every element he evokes—not only in his still lifes, one of his most cherished subjects, but also in landscapes, figures, interiors, and other compositions—reflects the human condition as contained within the silent objects that surround us. These objects somehow recount our stories, our choices, and our solitude. They become “landscapes of the soul.”

Beyond any symbolic interpretation, however, Cardillo’s works represent a refined investigation into the values of pictorial language and a contemporary study of pictorial space, exploring the possible combinations of the fundamental elements of painting: form, color, light, and space.

His works are held in numerous private collections. He lives and works between Trapani, Palermo, and Turin, where he also teaches.
