Giana De Dier

Panama • 1980

Biography

Giana de Dier was born in 1990 in Panama. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Panama, her artistic approach focuses on the identity and historical reconstruction of Afro-descendants who participated in the construction of the Canal.

Through mixed media collages and digital compositions, Giana De Dier's work examines the experiences of Afro-Caribbean migrants in the segregated Canal Zone at the beginning of the 20th century. Her work reconstructs situations from photographic archives, oral histories, family photos and documents to spark conversations around memory, identity, and representation. Her collages shed light on the difficulties and stories of resilience of people whose experiences have been silenced and overshadowed for more than a century.

Giana de Dier exhibited at the Salone degli Incanti and Gallerie delle Prigioni in Italy, the Art Gallery of the IDB Employees Association in Washington, SMV Gallery in New York, Allegro Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama.
