Biography

Born in 1926, Betye Saar is an African American artist and filmmaker. Best known for her collages and assemblage art, Saar studied interior and textile design from the University of California. 

Inspired by the sociopolitical landscape, Saar's work addresses issues of race and gender inequality. She draws on her individual experiences as a Black woman in America, as well as her family and their history. The resulting works are highly intimate and personal.

In recognition of her work, Saar has received several accolades including two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, two honorary doctorate degrees and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Alongside her artistic pursuits, Saar is a political activist.
