Martin Canin is is best known for his intense and vibrant color field paintings. Yet, Canin's was never satisfied with adopting a serial format as did the Color Field painters and the Washington Color School. His canvases maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect and measured elegance that separate them from pure geometry. “... in the more than forty years that I have been painting Manet's statement (to be concise in art is both necessary and elegant) still resonates for me. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still plastic means to speak my particular expression."

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Canin received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. The following two years he studied and worked on the West Coast in Carmel, California, and in 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960.

His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY.
