Description
This artwork is a fascinating integration of text and image, deploying a remarkable juxtaposition of colors and typographies. The frame is dominated by a rich mosaic of horizontal textual and pictorial bands, each segment offering a distinct depth of meaning. At the top, an inscription in Latin, "OPERIS NON EST SIMPLEX SENSUS," immediately draws attention, evoking a complex and multi-layered interpretation of the piece. The words are encircled by a bold border, reinforcing their imperative message. Each textual band is skillfully interwoven with visual elements, creating a dialogue between language and imagery. The central section features various stylized animal figures. Notably, an elaborately patterned lizard whose texture recalls a historic mosaic or tribal motif. Presentation
Born in 1937 in London, Tom Phillips is something of a polymath, having initially studied English at Oxford where he took drawing courses alongside his degree. He continued this artistic training at the Camberwell School of Art, where he took classes with Frank Auerbach.
In 1965 he had his first solo exhibition in London and has gone from strength to strength since then. Tom Phillips has exhibited at countless institutions around the world, from the National Portrait Gallery in London to the New York Public Library. Not only is he a prolific visual artist, but he has also written an opera, translated Dante's Inferno, and worked on numerous theater designs.
Varying in style and subject matter from Pop Art to portraits, Tom's art has earned him international recognition throughout his career. This recognition includes the Art Hunting Prize in 1988 and his election to the Royal Academy in 1984.
