Description
A canvas where the energy of the gesture takes precedence over the icon. The most recognisable character in global popular culture appears here in close-up, framed at half-length, caught mid-movement: torso leaning forward, one fist clenched with the thumb raised, the other arm stretched out to the right, mouth wide open in an unguarded laugh. The pose spills beyond the frame — the ears are cut off by the upper edge, the left hand by the right edge — as if the figure were too alive to be contained by the canvas.
The pictorial treatment is deliberately unfinished, and therein lies the whole strength of the work. Where the original image is a smooth, industrial flat colour, Harleen substitutes a visible material: the face is built up in layers of cream, pale pink, grey and ochre, left exposed in broad crossing brushstrokes; the red shorts vibrate with superimposed touches of vermilion and carmine, veined with white. The black outline, thick and confident, remains the only element holding the character's legibility together — everything else is pure paint.
The background, for its part, is a graphic battlefield: splatters and drips of red, loops of grey traced with spray can or wide brush, white circles, nervous scribbles overlapping without hierarchy. This gestural language, close to graffiti and abstract expressionism, creates a violent contrast with the gentleness of the subject and charges the whole with an urban, almost aggressive tension.
The point lies in that discrepancy. The title asserts a simple emotion — — but the chaos surrounding the character suggests something else: a joy under pressure, a smile held together amid the noise. Harleen works in the lineage of pop art and contemporary street art, which seize upon the icons of childhood and consumption and replay them through the hand, the accident and the trace. The artist's signature appears in the lower right of the canvas.
Presentation
Harleen was for a long time the assistant of several contemporary painters. It is in 2020 that she decides to unveil and sell her own works.
His art is distinctive, abstract, figurative and without concessions.
