    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Some time in the distant future, "Starman" in his Tesla Roadster, bleached by radiation and dinged with a few impact craters, tumbles past Mars in the silence of deep space.

In February 2018, during the inaugural test flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster, with Starman (the spacesuited mannequin) on board, was launched into a Mars-crossing heliocentric orbit. The Roadster is not expected to fly by Mars any time soon, but in the more distant future, it might experience the occasional close encounter. This painting depicts such an encounter.

I find the reality of a spacesuited mannequin cruising the solar system in a sports car both wild and captivating. Elon's roadster has become an iconic artifact of our times. It will continue to orbit the sun long past our lifetimes, maybe eventually becoming one of the few human artifacts surviving our era, if not our civilization.

Signed by the artist at lower right and on the back.
Artist label affixed to the back.
Framed by the artist in a distressed black ornate wooden frame.

I am a planetary scientist who loves to draw and paint. My artwork is about space and time, and our tiny yet hopeful place in their vastness. I draw and paint about our distant past, events we've survived, our profound cosmic loneliness, and where we might go from here.

Mars is the challenge of our time. Humans going to Mars will be greatest adventure in space exploration this century. Beyond Mars, we will journey to Saturn's moon, Titan, and one day, to the stars and deep into spacetime.

I have in my garage a primitive spacetime machine in which I can, at considerable risk, visit distant worlds and other epochs. My artwork is the travel log.
