Description
Four figures aligned, shoulder to shoulder, stand out against a blue background constructed in geometric blocks — an abstract skyline, made of white and cyan blocks that evoke both a city and spreadsheet cells. The group forms a compact black mass, a single dark block from which only faces emerge.
These faces are the essence. Treated in chalky white, outlined by a thick, harsh black line, they fix the viewer with large, round, wide-open, often misaligned eyes. Where the mouth should be, a tight scribble, an entanglement of lines that resembles a seam or clenched teeth: these men do not speak. The central figure, larger, white shirt and black tie, imposes with his build; the others taper in size to the right, a silent hierarchy of an organizational chart.
The suit is the real subject here. The uniform of the professional world, it unifies the bodies to make them indistinct — a single silhouette for four people. What Hamelink stages is this conformity that absorbs, the anxiety beneath the proper attire, the impossibility of saying what one thinks when the function speaks for you. The gazes, however, betray everything: they are the only place where something remains alive.
True to his style, Hamelink works with a raw and expressive line, between neo-expressionism and cartoon vocabulary, with blue splatters that cross the black mass and recall the gesture of painting. The handwritten signature, in the bottom left, is inscribed as a tag in the composition.
