Description
Flashe and thread on linen. Unframed.

Many of Stone's works have four elements or areas that have tension pulling at them and holding them together at the same time.

For her, this tension is an expression of the various pulls and balances that exist in the roles each of us play in our lives - in family and in self.

In Holding It Together, the materials also vary from section to section – two are painted, one is sewn, and one consists of the marks left from painting over thread and then removing the thread – almost a print.

Presentation

Audrey Stone was born in New York in 1964 and is an American abstract artist. She lives and works in Brooklyn. She studied at the College of Art and Design in Nova Scotia and obtained a bachelors in arts from the Pratt institute in Brooklyn and a masters in visual arts from the Hunter College in New York.

Audrey Stone is a protean artist, she expresses herself through various activities such as installations, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. Her work explores colors, lines, materialism on various mediums and surfaces. She uses a careful process on a blank canvas: she applies various layers and includes composite elements, such as handwoven threads. The sewn lines turn into sculptures. Audrey Stone is inspired by the hidden meanings of her materials: for example, thread can be decorative but also used to repair, it's integral but also ornamental, on the other hand the combination of colors can trigger archetypal reactions but also make room for personal reflections. Audrey Stone focuses on patterns, craftsmanship, guided by precision and tradition while creating contemporary abstract images.

The artist explains her artistic approach: "I began combining threads with drawings in 2007 ... it has several purposes; From a practical point of view, it accelerates my creative process, and from a visual point of view, it's like a game with the spectator who tries to find out which lines were drawn in ink or graphite and which were sewn (...). According to me, using thread is also symbolic. I like the way thread is related to women and domestic stories. Threads can repair, hold things together. It can also tie and be tangled up".

Audrey Stone's work has been part of individual and collective exhibitions since 1987. She has exhibited all around the United States, but also in Austria, Great Britain, Japan, France, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Her creations are also part of several private and institutional collections, these include Fidelity Investments and the Amateras Foundation in Sofia, Bulgaria.
