Biography

Gottfried Helnwein (born October 8, 1948 in Vienna) is an Austro-Irish artist. He is best known for his hyper-realistic images of wounded and bandaged children. Throughout his oeuvre, he deals with the themes of pain, injury and violence, and in doing so also touches on taboo and controversial topics of recent history. In particular, the subject of National Socialism is also dealt with in his works; the main focus of his work, however, is the portrayal of the child.
