Tanguy Mendrisse
"The search for beautiful photographs is intimately linked to the search for oneself"
Coming from a family in which art occupies an essential place, Tanguy Mendrisse seemed predestined to follow an artistic path too. Yet his choice to devote his life to photography is not obvious and stems from a personal construction. After training as an actor and having distinguished himself in the theater as in the cinema, he continues today his path as an actor, while fully investing in artistic photography.
His first revelation for photography comes with The Salt of the Earth, a report on the life and work of Sebastião Salgado, in which he distinguishes all the evasive power of this art. A reminiscence follows for the small town of Tarifa in southern Spain, where he had vacationed with his parents at the age of ten. Armed with his Olympus, he went there ten years later to capture the sublime lights of the Iberian sun that had painted his childhood memories. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation eventually turned into hard work, from which he returned with several hundred shots; the photographer was born.
In true autodidact, a total freedom shows through in his work: the artist does not impose any theme (landscape, portrait, architecture, etc.) and captures the image according to his desires. Not hiding his love for black and white and its subtleties, the artist also plays with the nuances of color photography; as a perfectionist, we find in each of his works the same concern for a very neat rendering.
The photographic work of Tanguy Mendrisse lies above all in a permanent search for emotion which encourages him, again and again, in his insatiable quest for different lights, new looks, a simple detail ...
