Salvador Dalí: Horses

Salvador Dalí's genius and multifaceted artistic talent makes him one of the greatest artists of all time. His name is associated with the surrealist movement and evokes images of a distorted or reimagined reality, but Dalí was interested in a much more varied breadth of subjects than what we imagine today.

One of Dalí's recurring subjects is the horse, a symbol which signified to him both strength and voluptuousness. He created his series The Dalinian Horses between 1970 and 1972. Some of the animals featured in the work came from mythology, like the pegasus or the horse of Troy. There are also depictions of heroes from literature and folklore, like Rossinante Don Quixote's loyal horse or Bucephalus, the favorite horse of Alexander the Great. Other equine works are simply characterized by their functionality, such as racing horses, workhorses or spring horses. Horses remained a recurring subject in Dalí's art.
