Chinese sculptor Xu Zhen was born in 1977. He lives and works in Shanghai. During his graphic design studies, he discovered the work of major artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol in magazines and started to learn more about art on his own. He is a representative figure of the the new generation of young contemporary Chinese artists.
Xu Zhen founded the MadeIn Company that functions as a gallery and exhibits his work and that of other artists.
A multidisciplinary artist, he focuses his work on human sensitivity but often uses humour and provocation as tools to highlight the socio-political flaws and taboos in society. He is interested in the changes that take place in China, a country that combines tradition and modernity in a very unique way compared to other cultures.
Xu Zhen exhibits his works in the world's largest galleries. In France, his work was shown at Perrotin and at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in 2016.
