This painting was born atop Mont d'Or, in a landscape where beech trees withstand the harsh elements. These ancient and tenacious trees bend under the weight of snow and storms, yet persist, imbued with a silent and resilient energy. For several days, Charles Belle worked on site, in extreme conditions where wind and snow swept everything away. Each canvas absorbed this ordeal, conveying the struggle between the fragility and power of life.
This painting is not simply a representation of a tree: it is a testament to resistance, the embodiment of an energy that transcends humankind. The artist's hand captures the intensity of the site, its forces, and its atmosphere. Filmmakers followed this work and, in the absence of drones (a technology still in its infancy for cinema at the time), devised a unique device to film this moment with 3D aerial views. Despite the extreme weather, they obtained breathtakingly powerful 3D aerial footage that truly does justice to the power of this place and the force contained within the painting.

Charles Belle is a painter whose work is distinguished by a poetic and powerful exploration of nature, often deployed in monumental formats. Starting from reality, the artist goes beyond it to reach the very essence of life. For him, nature is not a subject: it is a state, an energy, a passage towards abstraction.
This is reflected in the film “Beyond the Silences", the result of 16 years of filming in his studio (official JIFA24 selection – Louvre Museum).
In 2023, seven French museums joined forces to present the first major retrospective dedicated to Charles Belle, bringing together more than 1,600 works and offering a cross-sectional view of his career.
Present at the biggest contemporary art fairs — Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, FIAC, Art Brussels, Art Paris, Art on Paper Brussels and FAB Paris — Charles Belle has also been a founding member of the Art Identification Standard (AIS) consortium since 2019.
