Biography

Hailing from the Edo state in Nigeria, Oluwole Omofemi's deeply evocative and nostalgic portraits never fail to sustain his viewer's gaze. Having grown up in a bustling fishing village in East Africa, the thematic content of his work has been informed extensively by childhood experiences, and the sometimes arduous moments of adolescence. With a meticulous attention to corporeal detail and depth, the artist's portraits serve to showcase African fashion and, in his own words, “to bring about the rediscovery of afrocentric pride." Indeed, it is through the artist's emphasis on themes such as national heritage and pride that the viewer comes to feel that they truly know the subject of Omofemi's portraits.

Omofemi's work has been showcased in both group and solo exhibitions across Africa and Europe. His solo exhibition in 2021 entitled In Our Days has been lauded for its articulation of the modern African experience.
