Chevy Borchowsky

Chevy's workshop is located in Ellis Park, Johannesburg, where he creates sculptural and functional pieces out of metal – mainly steel, often accented with resin – resulting in pieces that merge industrial and organic styles. His creative influences include ethnic and western art, industrial design, fantasy, sci-fi, comics, urban decay, old buildings and decomposition and the perfection of nature.

His journey into the creative arts began in the 1980's, while travelling through Europe. It was during this period, when he had his first taste of working with metal – manufacturing and selling unique pieces of silver,brass and copper jewellery. He returned to South Africa in 1990, and continued making and selling jewellery. A few years later, he started designing and making candle holders and other small interior objects.

Chevy currently creates burners and candle-holders, electric lights (wall mounted, free-standing, suspended and outdoor varieties), pieces of furniture (tables, cabinets and chairs),sculpture and manufactured items for both interior and exterior spaces. His main material used for these is mild steel. Steel is sourced from scrapyards as well as conventional steel suppliers. Various found objects are also often used in the construction of sculptures. Each art piece is unique.

He has held various art exhibitions in and around South Africa, his work is in private collections around the world and he collaborates with the Tobian Art Gallery in Florence.
