Description

Two Gypsy women, Steles of the Camargue, 1995

Silver gelatin print

Numbered 2/10

Stelae are vestiges of time, immutable, intangible, impersonal structures. These "immemorial" monuments mark the landscape with their uprightness, open to the sky, and point to the stars from their summits.
The stelae are memorial monuments. They commemorate places such as the Scamandre marshes, Beauduc, the nave of the church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the pond of the Imperials, the Mas de la Félicité; they commemorate men such as fishermen, scutchers, herdsmen, Roma, Manouche, Gypsies, Travellers, Provençals, Languedocians; they commemorate gestures such as cutting, tying, throwing, arranging, catching, fishing, and praying.
Each gesture becomes a memorial, a stele with a photographic inscription as its epitaph.

(…)

These stelae are dedicated to the memory of these stories. They offer food for thought on the future of the Camargue.
