Li Jianhua (b. 1979, China) creates work that blends past and present, conscious and subconscious. His series explores traditional Chinese symbols—antique furniture, books, ink, and animals—to reflect on cultural identity, education, and societal values. Using classical techniques like linear brushwork and ink wash, Li contrasts structure with fluidity, history with emotion.
The series also speaks to personal and collective interpretation. As Li explains, meaning evolves with each viewer's background and perspective. In later works, a recurring figure—the “little golden man”—draws parallels with Israel’s cultural icon ‘Israelchik,’ representing the universal struggle between individual spirit and societal establishment. These cross-cultural symbols invite reflection on freedom, identity, and resistance across time and place.
