Biography

Sophie Pénicaud looks both near and far.

Her initial training in the applied arts is the right one for her; she will always give balance, the right perspective, volumes, a few chosen details... When she looks at the distance, she will be in the very presence of poetry, with blurred touches, because then there is distance. Indeed, while she knows how to see very closely, she also knows how to apprehend the distant, and when she deals with landscapes, we will see her original graphics, always underlying her work, creating very subtle and always successful interpenetrations.

Looking at these vast expanses of almost untouched nature, we enter into the presence of a depth that she has contemplated. In her landscapes, and far beyond them, she speaks of the presence, in this created world, of that which is spiritual presence, and which gives itself to be seen.

Colour will come into play in a gentle way. One yellow is constant and belongs to her alone. It is golden, and sometimes more acidic. It will be the note that characterises her work, in oils or acrylics, in her pastels and monotypes. It is embellished with varying shades of blue, red, green and sometimes touches of pink.

These five works by Sophie Pénicaud explore the many facets of the sky, from peaceful calm to the dramatic power of nature.
